Historical Insights

Answering President Lincoln's call for three year volunteers, 87 men joined Company E, 2nd Regiment, Vermont Volunteers at Tunbridge, Vermont on May 21, 1861. The regiment was mustered into United States service at Burlington on June 20, 1861.

The 2nd Vermont fought in most of the major battles in the East from Bull Run (1861) to Sailor’s Creek (1865). The 2nd Vermont became part of the famed Old Vermont Brigade in late 1861, and was considered one of the premier brigades of the Union Army.

As the 2nd Brigade of the 2nd Division of the VI Corps, the Vermont Brigade led the attack on Petersburg in 1865 that finally broke the Confederate line, leading to the fall of Richmond and the end of the war.

The enrollment of Company E totaled 173. Company E lost 37 men including: 2 officers and 19 enlisted in action, and 18 enlisted died from other causes.
